Victor Wembanyama: Expected first overall pick NBA drafts 2023

While this season is still young, several front offices are starting to look to the future. Some people spell the future of basketball as W.E.M.B.A.N.Y.A.M.A.

The future begins with the 2023 NBA Draft class, which is expected to be impressive and filled with depth. There are plenty of intriguing talents amidst a group of college freshmen and young international studs, but it all begins with Victor Wembanyama in the NBA. The 18-year old Frenchman is regarded as a true generational talent.

Victor WembanyamaHow good is Victor Wembanyama?

Victor Wembanyama is only a teenager, but is already 7’3″ and weighs close to 230 pounds. He’s widely regarded as the best NBA prospect since LeBron James, and James himself has been quoted calling Wembanyama “an alien”.

Barring an all-time season from presumed second overall pick Sterling “Scoot” Henderson, Wembanyama is a lock to go first overall. His game features three-level scoring ability (i.e. from anywhere on the court). He also moves effortlessly in a way that reminds some of Kevin Durant (another unicorn given his height).

Assuming a clean bill of health and putting on some weight, Wembanyama possesses tantalizing defensive upside as a high volume shot blocker and disruptor as a mobile 7-footer.

There’s not really a viable comparison for Victor either – maybe Porzingis as an early-stage defensive comparison and a young KD as an early-stage offensive one? That would give you a rough rookie floor of 20 points, 4 rebounds, 2.5 assists, 1 steal and 2 blocks per game. Wow.

Who is Victor Wembanyama?

Victor Wembanyama is expected to be the first overall pick in the NBA 2023 drafts. He is the most hyped basketball player in time that hasn’t even joined the NBA yet.

Wemby (nickname) was born in 2004 in La Chesney, France. He has a heritage from the Congolese Democratic Republic through his father. His grandfather (on his mother’s side) started playing basketball in the 1960s, so his family has a lot of experience. His mother would also go on to play basketball, and then coach Victor and his siblings from an early age.

He has an older sister and a younger brother. His sister, Eve Yema, also became a professional basketball player. In 2017 she won the gold medal for France in FIBA U16 Women’s European Championship. His younger brother is expected to also make waves in the world of basketball when he comes of age. This makes Victor Wembanyama and his siblings third generational-players.

Wembanyama started his career at his local basketball club, Entente Le Chesnay Versailles. Although he was offered to join FC Barcelona and ASVEL, his parents refused and placed him in Nanterre 92 at the age of 10. In 2019 at age 15, he started playing professionally in EuroCup as the second youngest player in history.

Victor Wembanyama stayed with Nanterre 92 until 2021. Then he did one season with ASVEL before joining Metropolitans 92. He joined Metropolitans 92 in 2022.

Although his weakness is said to be his thin frame, no one can deny Wembanyamas instinctive blocks. Many say Wembayana might have the most unblockable shot in basketball.

Who will get Victor Wembanyama?

As the season is still progressing, it’s impossible to say right now who will get Victor Wembanyama. The teams most likely to finish with bottom-five records are Detroit, Orlando, Houston, San Antonio and Charlotte. While Wembanyama would be a great fit on any of those teams, we’d like to see him end up in San Antonio. Buoyed by a historically great coach in Gregg Popovich, who coached superstar big men like Tim Duncan and David Robinson, Wembanyama wouldn’t be expected to carry the team from the get-go. His game and timeline would mesh nicely with a young San Antonio roster featuring talented wings like Keldon Johnson (23) and Devin Vassell (22).

Wembanyama and Britney Spears

In the lively surroundings of Las Vegas, near the prestigious ARIA Resort & Casino, an unforeseen encounter between pop sensation Britney Spears and the rising NBA star Victor Wembanyama took an unexpected turn in July 2023. TMZ was the first to bring to light the incident where Spears alleges she was slapped by Wembanyama’s security team. All she aimed for, as per her words, was a friendly tap on the shoulder to ask the player for a photo.

Britney, recounting the incident on her Instagram, detailed how she approached the San Antonio Spurs rookie and simply tapped him to grab a picture. However, the response she got was unexpected. “His security backhanded me in the face… in front of a crowd, nearly knocking me down and causing my glasses to fall,” Spears narrated.

Wembanyama’s Side of the Story

On the flip side, Wembanyama recalls the incident slightly differently. Speaking to ESPN, he shared, “Something did happen when I was walking with security to a restaurant. There was one person who was calling me, but we had already discussed with security not to stop.” He further mentioned, “That person grabbed me from behind, not on my shoulder. The security just pushed her away, and I continued walking.”

In a twist that feels straight out of a Hollywood script, Wembanyama only realized later that the individual was none other than Britney Spears. “I thought it was no big deal, then the Spurs’ security told me it was Britney Spears. I was shocked. I never saw her face. I just kept walking,” he mentioned.

For Spears, the incident wasn’t merely a simple encounter gone wrong. She expressed on Instagram how the event felt like a “cry out on all levels.” Sharing her long-standing experience with fame, she mentioned instances with *NSYNC where fans would go wild. “Not once has a security guard ever hit another person in all my years in the industry,” she commented. Despite the unexpected altercation, Britney magnanimously noted, “I’m still a huge fan of Wembanyama. It’s not his fault.”

Wembanyama is 7 feet 3 inches tall (220cm) and weighs 229 lb (104 kg). He comes from a tall family, as his mother, Elodie de Fautereauis, is 6 feet 3 inches (191cm), and his father, Felix Wembanyama, is 6 feet 6 inches (198cm).

Victor Wembanyama is a French basketball player in Metropolitans 92. Through his father, he has roots in the Congolese Democratic Republic.

Wemby is 18 years old. Victor Wembanyama was born January 4t, 2004 in Le Chesnay, France. His parents are Elodie de Fautereauis (mom) and Felix Wembanyama (dad).

Averages of one steal, 3.8 blocks and 9.4 rebounds per 36 minutes across his first two years as a professional demonstrate his preternatural defensive ability. And he is equally impressive at the other end of the court, where he averages 15.2 points per 36 minutes.
