Twitch banning users from streaming unlicensed gambling content

Gambling streams are not new to the platform, and yet in recent years, some on the platform have argued that rich creators promoted potentially harmful content to young, impressionable fans, while promoting gambling addiction.

Twitch yesterday, 20.09.22., announced banning unlicensed gambling sites, including slots, roulette and dice websites, starting next month.

Banned sites include Stake.com, Rollbit.com, Duelbits.com, and Roobet.com. Twitch might ban more sites in the future. Websites focusing on sports betting, fantasy sports, and poker will still be permitted.

Some of Twitch’s biggest streamers — such as Imane “Pokimane” Anys, Matthew “Mizkif” Rinaudo, and Devin Nash — threatened a boycott of the platform during the week of Christmas. While gambling streams are not new to the platform, in recent years, some on the platform have argued that rich creators promoted potentially harmful content to young, impressionable fans.  Many creators have been pushing Twitch to do something about online gambling streams. They highlighted the potential dangers to younger users. Some have used the hashtag #twitchstopgambling on Twitter to raise awareness about the gambling streams.

Most recently, Twitch users expressed outrage after a streamer known as Sliker said he scammed his followers and other Twitch streamers out of money in the video game Counter-Strike: Global Offensive. In a video uploaded Saturday, Sliker, whose real name is Abraham Mohammed, teared up after he claimed that he scammed people out of more than $200,000 to feed his gambling addiction. Sliker did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

In a lengthy Twitter thread Sunday, Nash wrote: “Gambling is horrible for the platform. Get rid of it.” He said it’s “damaging to young Twitch users, bad for legitimate advertisers, and brings down the quality of the whole site.” He also described the issue as “a platform problem, not a people problem.”

Bet365 expands into micro-betting with Simplebet

Bet365 partners up with a B2B technology supplier Simplebet to include five core US sports. Global sportsbook heavyweight has added micro-betting to the US sports betting markets.

Betting on the outcome of the next pitch in baseball or the next drive in American football – has been integrated into the bet365 app across Simplebet’s five core products of NFL, college football, NBA, college basketball, and MLB. Simplebet VP of revenue and trading Ryan Keur shared, “It was actually a fairly quick turnaround, in terms of the way that the partnership evolved,” Keur said.

“I think micro-betting has come to the forefront over the better part of the last 12 months. Our initial partnership with DraftKings and it definitely has gained quite a bit of industry-wide exposure. “Both sides thought of this as a really great product. It is something that they think their users will love and engage with. Something that can be can also provide some good monetization on the business side,” he added.

The first markets went live last Thursday to coincide with the start of the NFL season. The plan is to add NBA and college basketball markets when the new season starts on 18 October.

The long-term agreement comes amid an increased interest in micro-betting in the sector, recently typified by the launch of the micro-betting-focused B2C operator Betr, the brainchild of ex-Simplebet CEO Joey Levy and social media star Jake Paul. Keur added, “Over the course of its four-and-a-half years, at times I feel like Simplebet has maybe over-promised and under-delivered and since getting live with DraftKings. “I think now hopefully with bet365, most people would say we’re actually underpromising and over-delivering. “We’re providing something that’s really hard to do, pricing these out in real-time and trying to provide a frictionless experience with as minimal bet delay as possible. We’re trying to take on and not limit customers, with our partners, so we’re really confident in our models throughout each period of the games,” he added.
