College Sports Betting in NY

Betting on college sports is allowed in the state of New York, but there are some limitations.

New York sports books are not allowed to offer lines on games or events involving in-state college teams. That means that if you’re in the state, you’ll be unable to bet on schools like St. Johns or Syracuse. This restriction also extends to futures markets. New York-based college teams are not available on championship odds boards at sports books across the state.

College player props are similarly unavailable for New Yorkers / New York bettors. Within that same vein, New York sports book operators are not allowed to take bets on games taking place within the state, even if it’s between two schools that are not New York college athletic programs.

This rule extends even if the New York teams are playing out-of-state. If Syracuse was to be playing the University of Virginia in Virginia, New York sports books would still not be allowed to offer markets on that game.

This rule can be found in other states such as New Jersey or Illinois; the rule itself exists to keep college sports betting free of wrongdoing and corruption.

New York online sports betting has been officially legal for a while now. This means that there are sportsbooks launched during the initial stages of legal and regulated state. Players can enjoy varied selections of bets, types of parleys, and bet on major leagues as well. Of course, bettors have access to many college and international game bets as well.

Residents may be surprised to learn that signing up for a legal sportsbook is more difficult than, say, signing up for, say, Tinder.

You should expect to provide some or all of the following information upon signing up– in addition to name, address and phone number:

  • drivers license number
  • social security number
  • other identifying information

Thankfully, depositing is more straightforward. While it was more difficult in the early days of online betting, banks, credit card companies and online payment providers have improved the way they handle gambling transactions.

Users can expect to be able to fund their account with credit card, online banking, echeck, PayPal, Skrill, or more esoteric ways, like depositing at a physical location.

We recommend online banking or echeck (routing and account number) as the most reliable ways.

All of the currently live sportsbooks in New York offer betting on desktop, laptop, and mobile devices, including iPhone and Android. On a computer, you will have download geolocation software before you can bet. Phones have GPS built in.

Since most users are only mobile – especially while watching sports – your best bet is using a mobile app. However, we recommend registering through a browser first to claim the signup bonuses.
