State lawmakers passed House Bill 29 toward the end of 2021, setting statewide legalized sports betting in motion. As a result, Sports betting in Ohio will launch on January 1, 2023.
Derek Longmeier, the Problem Gambling Network of Ohio Executive Director, commented, “The challenges of problem gambling go far beyond the person placing a bet. Families, children, and businesses all face the consequences of a person’s gambling addiction.”

Longmeier detailed indications that could signify a gambling addiction. This includes anxiousness, diminished work output, and drastic mood changes. Other warning signs are secluding oneself and hiding the amount of money and time spent gambling. On top of that, addicts might take money meant for essential expenses to gamble.

Ohio Casino Control Commission Director of Operations and Problem Gambling Services Amanda Blackford highlighted the importance of having these kinds of programs in place because of betting trends and concerns about problem gambling in other states.

Blackford added that in other states that preceded Ohio in legalizing sports betting, we saw higher interest and more struggles with problem gambling. We want people to have fun and be responsible.”
