As much as gambling is fun and exciting, the gambling industry faces a significant challenge: responsible gambling. In this challenge, we have an important organization that can help us navigate the North American market. Let us introduce our RG heroes: the National Council on Problem Gambling (NCPG).
Founded in 1972, NCPG is the oldest organization dedicated to guiding gamblers and their families through gambling addiction. By offering support, resources, and guidance, the NCPG aims to create a safer and more sustainable gambling environment.
When I had the privilege at SBC North America 2023 to chat with Keith Whyte, the Executive Director of NCPG, I was eager to hear about the organization’s efforts to combat the impact of gambling addiction.

NCPG’s Path to Responsible Gambling in America
The NCPG is a national advocate for programs aimed at helping problem gamblers and their families. In addition to helping individuals, they also provide responsible gambling services to the industry to reduce the harm caused by gambling addiction and increase the benefits of gambling for everyone.
As I talked with Keith, he explained that the NCPG offers training for industry employees and develops guidelines and certificates for internet gambling companies. I asked Keith about the impact of their services on the industry, and he was quick to point out the success of their Internet Responsible Gambling guidelines.
“These guidelines have been adopted as best practice by the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement, helping to establish a consistent set of safeguards for consumers across the United States,” he said. The guidelines not only assist suppliers in building platforms to meet these standards, but they also help regulators apply them consistently.
Encouraging Industry Involvement in Responsible Gambling
The NCPG also offers many resources to help the industry embrace responsible gambling. They host the annual NCPG National Awards, release marketing toolkits for the industry, and financially support initiatives that help problem gamblers. The organization even holds a conference to educate industry professionals on responsible gambling.
I asked Keith about how the NCPG benefits the industry, and he responded, “We aim to create a more sustainable industry by ensuring that we protect vulnerable individuals.” With training, guidelines, and certification, the NCPG is shaping America’s more ethical and responsible gambling industry.
When I asked Keith how individuals could get involved with the NCPG, he mentioned that the organization is a membership NGO that receives no government funding.
“Anyone in the United States or worldwide can join the National Council as an individual. We also have an annual advocacy day where members can join our efforts to lobby for responsible gambling legislation,” he explained.
Helping Gamblers Overcome Stigma and Shame
One of the NCPG’s main services is the 800 Gambler helpline, which is available 24/7 via phone, chat, text, and even email. Keith also informed me that their service provides a toll-free and confidential way for gamblers to get help, something that is crucial considering the shame and stigma that often come with gambling addiction.
“It’s vital that individuals struggling with addiction know they are not alone,” Keith said. The helpline offers individual support and referrals to local resources, so it’s very valuable for those in need.
During our interview, Keith Whyte also told me that the organization’s main goal is to provide support and resources for problem gamblers and their families. By collaborating with the gambling industry, the NCPG seeks to create a safer, more sustainable environment for everyone involved.
Executive Director Keith Whyte was honored at the 2023 National Conference for his 25 years of service to NCPG.
Join us in congratulating Keith on his numerous accomplishments and enduring legacy!
