Interest in Massachusetts sports betting license
The Massachusetts Gaming Commission (MGC) announced that 29 potential applicants have registered an interest in the license. On October 7th MGC launched a scoping survey to gather specific information on potential applicants who are willing to get the license.
The MGC received 29 operators scoping surveys from potential applicants for Category 1, 2, and 3 Sports Wagering Licenses. Three were in relation to Category 1 Licenses, three were from parties interested in Category 2 Licenses, and 23 came from potential Category 3 License applicants. The MGC noted that while the survey is a required part of a license application, the non-refundable application processing fee of $200,000 is not due until full applications are submitted.
Applicants for the new sports betting licenses must submit a completed application by November 21. Any other interested parties can still submit the scoping survey, despite the initial October 17 deadline has passed. Massachusetts will make available seven online-only licenses. Casino and racetrack operators in the state can apply for a sports betting license. The law also established two different taxation regimes –with online betting taxed at 20% and retail at 15%. While bettors will be permitted to wager on a wide range of events, including most types of college football, an exception is carved out in the law banning betting on matches involving in-state teams.
Sports Betting in Maryland updates
Maryland’s Sports Wagering Application Review Commission (SWARC) will meet and discuss around 21 sports wagering operator applications on November 21. It is only 3 days left until the deadline for operators to submit their applications for SWARC passes.
The names of 21 applicants are still unknown, however, as understood, these include 10 sports wagering operator applicants as well as 10 connected sports apps and one Class B (retail) applicant. After the SWARC approves applications on November 21, applicants are then passed back to the Maryland Lottery & Gaming Commission for a final approval process. This includes the demonstration of licensee operations and procedures before licenses can be issued.
Overall, SWARC can award up to 60 mobile licenses and up to 30 Class B facility licenses. After licenses are issued, operators can begin taking bets. This opens the possibility of sports betting in Maryland as early as December.
In comments reported by the Southern Maryland Chronicle, SWARC chairman Tom Brandt commented, “All eyes will be upon us for getting (online) sports wagering going in the state of Maryland. And then we become the gating step in the process.” It is understood materials from many applicants have arrived at SWARC for consideration in advance of the deadline but are still subject to review. Maryland’s first retail sportsbook opened back in 2021. Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Agency Director said the state would launch online sports betting in Autumn 2022. Maryland’s betting launch takes a long time to regulate, even though Governor Hogan signed the legislation in 2021.
