BetMGM has reached out to its customers recommending a two-factor authentication implementation. The reason? Hacking attempts have been increasing against US operators.
The attackers from the so-called ”dark web” have logged in to sportsbook and igaming accounts by utilizing existing customer passwords and clearing the available funds in many cases.
To acknowledge the situation, BetMGM sent an email to its players saying:
“You may have seen recent news reports concerning possible data compromises at various gambling operators. Although it is unlikely your BetMGM account has been impacted by these events, we recommend you take the following steps to protect your account.”
The attacks started last week when hackers created fraudulent accounts using the information of professional poker players. The main aim was to withdraw funds from unsuspecting account holders. The operator advised players to create a unique BetMGM password to minimize the chance of hackers using the same password obtained from other sites.
Additionally, BetMGM suggested that players should opt into BetMGM email alerts, which notify customers of any login attempt. As per the email, “Taking these necessary steps will ensure the continued security of your personal information.” BetMGM confirmed that the operator is “actively investigating” the potential breach, with Global Payment Gaming Solutions likewise assisting authorities.
What is two-factor authentication?
Two Factor Authentication, or 2FA, is an extra layer of protection. It is used to ensure the security of online accounts beyond just a username and password. It is a popular method of enforcing cybersecurity.
